Astronomers Without Borders eclipse glasses donation program

don't throw away your eclipse glasses! mail them to Astronomers Without Borders, or deliver them to the nearest organization (most likely a local school) collecting them for AWB, so that students in South America and Africa can safely watch the next eclipse!

The blood bank emailed me: A+ donors needed. (Guess my blood type.) It has in fact been over eight weeks since I donated last.

Problem: I am fucking moving. I do not have enough physical cope as it is. Blood donation knocks me the fuck over!

Auuuuugh.

All hail my incredible skills

Yesterday post-swim (!) the first time after endoscopic surgery (!!) I was patting myself dry. I looked at my towel and found bright red on it. Eek! I looked at my abdomen -- all good -- and then at my hand, where a long, slice-y cut was oozing a little blood. To add insult to injury, it wasn't even on my fingers, where one might feasibly mishandle the courtesy razor: It was right between my index and second finger, actually requiring a butterfly bandaid.

I'm just not meant to shave, y'all. Most of my leg scars (in spite of several knee surgeries and a few IV port leftovers from hospitals), are from cutting myself up trying to get hair off that belongs there in the first place.

In other health news, I found the world's tiniest malpractice problem! So, here was the success of the above-mentioned fifty minutes of swimming without aggravating my Problem Incision, the rightmost one, which of course includes some details, but not gory ones after all )

I need extra hands around here. Preferably attached to strong arms, steely spines, and sturdy legs, with a head on those shoulders that can intuit what I need to happen better than I can either intuit or explain the things.

In lieu of this (because TELEPORTER!!! *shakes fist*, and also all my immediate family are Occupied Elsewhere today):

Would any y'all who believe in and understand how to accomplish the "sending healing energy over a distance" thing please do the thing for me? Not necessarily healing, though I wouldn't exactly say no to that; strength, resilience, anything that you have to spare at the moment and that you think I could use in order to get all my stuff moving-ready and the apartment sparkly clean. Protective and cleansing energies would also be welcome.

If you want to do a trade, drop me a comment with a prompt: a single word, a brief phrase, a song lyric, an evocative image. After I'm all moved, I'll stitch all the prompts into a story and post it for all y'all to see. :)

*waves to somebody who may not wish to be named* So many coffees! Thank you!

Can someone—who has got more brain to think of google terms than I have presently got—point me at moving-out checklists? Apartment-departing–specific if possible?

I am still raising money for auto repairs. More urgently, I would very much like to be able to buy pizza and coffee to keep me operating all week while I'm frantically packing and cleaning for moving, instead of making coffee and assorted meals.

All fiction requests will be delayed until Tue Aug 29 at the earliest. Please say how urgent all divination requests are; if they are not urgent, they will be similarly delayed. Etsy orders I'll get out the door promptly. If you want to commission jewelry or artwork, we can talk, but the same delay applies. Redbubble orders are on Redbubble's schedule.

If you signal-boost this and let me know you've done it, I'll do 100 words of fiction to your request, one small art to your request, or one divination card-equivalent—no earlier than Tue Aug 29.

1. Every day, there is sunshine. (Okay, 256 days out of 365, but still. Come at me, sis.)

2. When I open the front garden blinds, there's hummingbirds fluttering away. HUMMINGBIRDS! They're the fairies of the bird world. Magical.

2. When I walk outside in my -- low-key wealthy -- neighborhood in what is esseeeeeentially pajamas, no one comments, or even spares me a second glance. This is brought to you by the girl who for the one short outside stint planned did not bother putting anything on beyond house-pants and a Nevertheless She Persisted shirt.

4. When I walk outside in the City on a workday, however, people throw me appreciative glances. European-style attire isn't common on the West Coast, and even if people wouldn't wear it they seem to agree it's interesting, or maybe even daring ("How is she going to explain that to her startup CEO in his ratty, IRONIC Status Quo band t-shirt?")

5. People are nice. I do mean that in an occasional nice-guy kind of way, but for 99% of interactions that suits me perfectly well. Germans are forthright, and you will know where you stand with them. Just, in 75% of interactions, you won't LIKE knowing where you stand with them.

…Some weeks just not starting more ginormous WIPs is the real success, okay? I expended a lot of focus on absolutely positively not starting SEVERAL things this week (and… yep, that is definitely the only thing that was using up brain processing cycles this week at an unusual rate, YEP, TOTALLY).

Anyway.

WIPs currently active: 5, because I bumped All Eternals Deck #2 off the list until I figure out what happens after the beginning.

Words written this week: 4,041

WIPs that got no words this week: 0

WIPs that did get words this week:

Codename: Aluminum Bastard (aka broken dick epic): 883, and I started writing Chapter 47 and then abruptly discovered where the floating point on the outline labeled [particular sex act redacted]? should go in the story, so. Whee!

Born in the Blood: 276, chugging along toward [more sex acts redacted]!!

Slavefic #6: 104. Okay, that looks bad? I’m at the point where I outlined things for this part of the series literally almost two years ago and now have to figure out how to hook them up with the stories that I’ve actually written, so there’s a bit of frantically-jury-rigging-a-round-CO2-filter-from-square-components going on. Hopefully none of which will be apparent from the end result. :)

I was feeling all nostalgic for lj the other day and remembered, hey, dufus, you have your dw journal.

Life is life. Q is seven and starting second grade in two weeks. Yeesh, where did the time go? I spend most of my time these days parenting, writing sci-fi erotic romance with an eye to self-pubbing, and being a giant ball of simmering rage at the state of the world.

Fannishly, I'm still working on some Jupiter Ascending stuff, and it remains the movie of my heart, but most of my writing is going to original stuff these days.

I've been reading a shit-ton of romance, both as market research and because guaranteed happy endings are a balm to my soul. But I am gearing up to take a weekend soon and blow through N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy in one go.

I didn't garden this year - had no energy in spring, and never really got up the gumption. I probably should have twigged that as a sign I'm in a low-grade depression swing, but yay, hindsight.

Not watching much TV these days (writing and being angry suck up all my free time), but I really want to pick up Killjoys, because I need some fun SF in my eyeballs. Man, do I miss SG-1. Clearly I need to plan a rewatch.

:: I understand other people have social Saturdays, bing-watch The Defenders*, or combine the two; go, y'all! Me, I write a brief article for work. When I say "brief" I mean it's supposed to be two pages. I didn't write it briefly -- more like five hours for the baseline -- nor is it brief at the moment (though there's always changing the font back to Times New Roman. Which is, let me put it like that, better than Courier New).

* I ask whether to watch The Defenders on Twitter; two threads (the more Yay) here and (the more Nay) here.

:: Well, at least I can claim I had a social Friday -- my naturalized friend in Cole Valley took me in after the Worst Day Ever, got us and his two other flatmates a close-to-perfect gluten-free dinner, and I found out first-hand that Archer really is only funny to some people. I didn't want to aggravate my friend, who is extremely loving to me, always (without, I stress, wanting to sleep with me -- he has a relatively quick succession of girlfriends at all times). But Men Behaving Badly is basically my bullet-proof squick.

Too bad that...well, let's not get into that here.

:: The good thing that I consumed lately was the latest installment of Seanan McGuire's InCryptid series -- "Magic for Nothing". Finally, finally I really connected with a character of hers; Antimony Price is the first of the Price siblings I genuinely like. At first I was wondering whether the voice actress put me off (audiobook listener because of the lack of sit-down free time). But no; the same voice actress voices Magic For Nothing, and I wanted to hug Annie all the time. Or maybe shoulder-bump. She's not a physically affectionate character. Perhaps not incidentally, this was also the first book of the six where I spoilered )

:: What I have just started AND almost finished is one of those cheap offers on Audible**, namely a book called Louisiana Longshot by Jana DeLeon. I enjoy it a lot -- much more than I expected. It's grouped as "cozy mystery", which I personally take to read, "Did you like Miss Marple and her village? Try this!" There is very little cozy about characters or plot, which is really for the better. As you know, I like dragons and spaceships and ladies who kick ass...not all at the same time, necessarily. But this book made me grin, a lot. For one, it's funny. Second, in the Atomic Blonde age, I cannot but picture Charlize Theron in the main role of a basically-benched CIA field agent ending up in a Louisiana bayou. It's an enormously Bechdel-passing book, and while I can already tell the solution to one of the B plots (and you will too), I haven't solved the A Plot yet; I think the straight-up murder has to be misdirection. Weakness: Where the fuck are all the Black people? This is LA; we're talking 33% of the population. I can see small towns self-selecting, especially Sinful, LA, but not to that degree.

** I do give too much money to Jeff Bezos.

So I'm an Amazon Prime member and have been for years; partially it's my physical limitation of carrying heavy things (crates of veggie juice, three-packs of old-fashioned apple cider vinegar in glasses), partially it's my working hours -- even worse now -- and partially, let's be real, it's my innate laziness. I understand I am contributing to the death of live, human retail, which is why I buy all light things I can carry locally with extreme prejudice.

Amazon Prime comes with perks. They're not great perks, but show me a company that doesn't profit from supposed swag, and I'll sell you a bridge in Brooklyn. The one I use most often is Amazon Prime Music. Is the selection dubious? Sure. But it's "free".

This morning when picking "Happy Indie Pop" I saw this:

Books: Currently in the middle of Abroad by Liz Jacobs, Who Is One Of Us, and about to start reading... one of the two books I still have checked out from the library about the Chicago River and what its deal is.

Books finished: I just finished rereading Persuasion and IT CONTINUES TO BE THE BEST OF THE TWO JANE AUSTEN NOVELS I HAVE EVER ACTUALLY READ.

To the surprise of no one, I did in fact mentally work out the AU where Bitty is Anne, and then [personal profile] staranise lured me into joining her contemplation of the AU where JACK is Anne and in conclusion I am definitely not writing any Persuasion AUs ever.

...Because I am totally onto "what if Jack hadn't gotten an NCAA waiver to play at Samwell after playing in the QMJHL" AUs now.

Ahem. Where was I. READING THINGS, RIGHT.

Fic: Still 15 WIPs bookmarked! [archiveofourown.org profile] maculategiraffe's Fallout 4 series updated today and IT IS GREAT AND MIGHT EAT YOUR LIFE!! I've managed to get my Marked for Later list on AO3 down to... 99! Although my "To reread" bookmark tag is up to 39.

Fic finished:

(A sampling of stuff I’ve bookmarked recently--you can see all my bookmarks at http://archiveofourown.org/users/dsudis/bookmarks)

the black lake by alcibiades (Bucky/Steve, T, 9k) Ohhh boy I hadn't had my heart shredded by a recovering!Bucky story in a while, so this was. OH BUCKY HONEY. PLEASE KEEP GETTING BETTER.

In So Many Words by alocalband (Nursey/Dex, M, 17k) In which Nurse writes stories that... all... seem... to be... the same... story. And they're all about him and Dex even when they're NOT ABOUT HIM AND DEX. <3

Short Circuit by Chiyume (Bucky/Steve, E, 20k) Bucky's arm gets damaged and starts giving him an... unusual... variety of sensory feedback every time it's touched. Which would be a lot easier for him to explain to Steve if he and Steve weren't both firmly convinced that the other isn't interested in him like that. (I would love about a million more stories about Bucky's arm getting cross-wired like this, but this one was definitely A GREAT START. :D)

You Make Me Look Legitimate. by Lanna Michaels (Bitty/Jack, G, 3k) LANNA WROTE FIC FOR MEEEEE ABOUT BITTY GOING TO THE 2018 OLYMPICS AND IT IS ADORABLE AND GREAT!!! <3 <3 <3

And lo and behold, [personal profile] cofax7 offered to go out for a drink and food last night, and that was the bright spot of my day. (I love Bask up on Columbus, where they also never gluten'ed me).

The rest of the day...don't ask. When you schlepp home five pounds of reading at 11pm in order to prepare, and find out after dutifully going through it that none of it was relevant? Suboptimal. Should have known this day, minus the A+ dinner with C, would suck dead rats through a garden hose (Exhibit 1, Exhibit 2).

Did I ever tell you about my high school Latin teacher? Ms. Kit Smoot. Studying with her I learned so much and had such fun and—

I wanted to tell her so many things, about how she helped get me to where I am today. But when I visited the school she was never there.

She died last night.

(I hadn't realized she meant so much to me.)

May her memory be eternal.

So I got tagged… at least three times in the “post the first line of your WIP” meme, so… I’m just gonna post the first lines of all my WIPs in this post, and anybody who thinks posting first lines of your WIP(s) sounds like a fun time, consider yourselves tagged. :D

WIPs currently active: 6, because, oops, I started writing kidfic in a new fandom, WHO COULD HAVE FORESEEN.

Words written this week: 7,066

WIPs that got no words this week: 0

WIPs that did get words this week:

Codename: Aluminum Bastard (aka broken dick epic): 307, and I think I… finished… a chapter??

First line: Steve caught up with him for the last time at the Grand Canyon.

Because it is 2014 forever over here.

Born in the Blood: 115, and… possibly I also finished a chapter here, too? A short “holy shit guys it’s been three months but I swear it’s not abandoned here please have what I had outlined as the first half of this chapter” kinda chapter, but still! Updating soon, hopefully!

First line (which you may already know since it’s already posted but what the heck): With every lead on Bucky running dry before he could even chase it, one of the biggest effects the day of the helicarrier battle actually had on Steve, four months later, was the fact that Natasha had leaked SHIELD’s entire email directory and now the whole world knew his email address.

All Eternals Deck #2: 595. You know that feeling when you try and try to start a fic and you finally figure out the beginning and you’re like WOOOOO HERE WE GO and then you get to the end of the beginning and you’re like… what is this entirely featureless vista before me…?

Haha, me either.

First line: Bruce always knew, unavoidably, when he was waking up after being the Other Guy.

Slavefic #6: 474.

First line:  When Steve had been lying still and quiet for a little while, he found his ears attuned to Bucky’s breathing.

…Yeah we’re picking up about five minutes after the end of “The Sacrifice Play.”

Wildly Unmanageable Ace!Bitty Longfic: 2,424

First line:  When it finally clicked, it felt like landing a jump combination after he’d fallen on it the first hundred times.

Jack/Bitty angsty happy ending kidfic: 3,151, probably would have been more if I hadn’t spent the first 24 hours after I decided to start writing it obsessively searching for the right title to put on the empty word document.

First line: On the third day of Bitty’s summer visit, Jack had to go to the rink.
